World Meditation Day: Embrace Ayurveda for Inner Peace and Harmony

Meditation and Ayurveda goes hand in hand just like soul and body.

December 21 is unanimously accepted as the World Meditation Day by the United Nations. In today’s fast-paced world, this day serves as a reminder to pause, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves. Meditation, with its ancient roots, offers a pathway to holistic well-being. This year, we explore how meditation aligns with Ayurveda, the timeless science of life, to enhance our journey toward harmony.

Global Recognition and Celebrations

  • The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared December 21 as World Meditation Day, acknowledging meditation’s potential to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
  • This marks the time when the importance of meditation and its benefits have reached universally.
  • This year theme “Meditation for Global Peace and Harmony,” highlighted meditation’s role in fostering peace and unity worldwide.

Meditation and Ayurveda: A Harmonious Blend

  • Ayurveda teaches that balance is the essence of health, governed by the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
  • Meditation serves as a powerful practice to stabilize these energies, fostering calm and clarity.
  • It aligns seamlessly with the Satvika lifestyle, a pillar of Ayurveda emphasizing purity, peace, and contentment.
  • Regular meditation harmonizes the body’s natural rhythms, improving digestion, balancing hormones, and enhancing sleep quality, embodying Ayurveda’s holistic approach to wellness.

The Science of Serenity

  • Modern research supports what ancient scriptures on Yoga have long advocated: meditation reduces stress, sharpens focus, and boosts immunity.
  • When combined with practices like Pranayama (breathing exercises) and Ayurvedic herbal remedies, its benefits are amplified.
  • Herbs such as Ashwagandha and Brahmi help to calm the the mind thereby enhancing the benefits of meditation.

Starting Your Meditation Journey

If you’re new to meditation, consider these steps:

  • Find a Quiet Space: Choose a serene spot where you can relax. It can be anywhere where you feel at ease. Make sure its free from clutter and you have a comfortable seat.
  • Sit Comfortably: Use a cushion or chair to support your posture. Its not necessary to do meditation in the Padmasana, choose any posture which is comfortable. Lying on the floor won’t qualify!
  • Focus on Your Breath: Close your eyes, observe your breathing, and let thoughts flow without judgment. Your mind will wander like a wild horse but don’t try to tame it rather let it go freely and gently bring your focus back to your breath.
  • Enhance the Experience: Incorporate Ayurvedic elements like diffusing essential oils or sipping herbal tea before or after your practice.
  • Begin with 5-10 minutes daily and gradually extend your sessions.

You can also take help of apps available on app store in your phone.

ATOM app is one of my personal favorite apps for guided meditation. Its available for free and I am positive that it will aid in your journey of peace and calm.
